I will be using Verkada for the locking system on all of my properties. They will offer a unified platform with a centralized database system for the key cards. They also support MacOS from the pictures I seen, so I will be able to continue to use an OS I am familiar with. Obviously, the locking system needs a WAN connection to make the most of the system. With that in mind, all apartments will have a building private network for connecting the locking system to the WAN. Houses will be required to have a broadband connection so the locking system can work properly. Violating this requirement will be a violation of the lease.
All locations will have battery banks to keep the system operational during a power outage. It is set to unlock during a power outage, so the battery bank will be essential for operations. A low income tenant renting a house should be able to qualify for Xfinity’s Internet Essentials which will provide a 75MBPS connection for $15/month. While the upstream is slower, I will imagine that the locking system will download the information needed.
